Use jhana AND vipassana to require both terms in the same sutta and edition, even in different passages. For inflections, choose Pāli word forms; root family also accepts words such as jhana and finds their roots. Use quotation marks to search a phrase containing the word AND.

Library coverage & sources

13,578 Pāli and English edition-texts · 719,122 passages. The indexed English editions are Bhikkhu Brahmali, John Kelly, Bhikkhu Kovilo, Soma Thera, Suddhāso Bhikkhu, Bhikkhu Sujato, Ānandajoti Bhikkhu, Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu, F. Max Müller, F. L. Woodward. Coverage varies by translator and collection; this is not every published English translation.

Public texts come from SuttaCentral’s CC0 Bilara collection, and 152 texts translated by Ānandajoti Bhikkhu from Ancient Buddhist Texts (CC BY-SA 3.0), whose sentences are placed beside SuttaCentral’s segments by guess, and 1,291 texts translated by Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu from dhammatalks.org (CC BY-NC 4.0), whose sentences are placed beside SuttaCentral’s segments by guess, and 26 texts translated by F. Max Müller from Project Gutenberg (Public domain), whose sentences are placed beside SuttaCentral’s segments by guess, and 26 texts translated by F. L. Woodward from Project Gutenberg (Public domain), whose sentences are placed beside SuttaCentral’s segments by guess. Pāli forms are derived from Digital Pāḷi Dictionary, by Bodhirasa and contributors, under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. Root family accepts a root or a dictionary headword and resolves all roots listed for that spelling. Prefix √ to explicitly select a root. Compounds use the dictionary’s compound families, not arbitrary substrings; coverage is limited to that analysis. Use Contains for a broader substring search. These modes are not semantic translations.

Uppercase AND requires every term in the same indexed text and edition. Some source texts are grouped ranges or chapters; these retain their original identifiers. For uploaded books, AND requires every term in the same imported passage.

Commentary exclusion covers the indexed Niddesa, Paṭisambhidāmagga, Nettippakaraṇa and Peṭakopadesa, and personal books you identify as commentary. A translation volume’s internal introductions and notes are not automatically separated. The daily reader also offers publicly available SuttaCentral editions that are not in this search index.
