About this reading pool
5,764 reading units come from SuttaCentral’s Pāli Sutta Piṭaka index, checked October 1, 2026; 5,602 list English translations. Sujato’s English translation is preferred when available. The reader offers all editions listed for the selected text, including the Pāli original.
SuttaCentral sometimes groups discourses into ranges or chapters. Each indexed page counts as one unit, with an equal chance of selection. Khuddaka includes all 20 indexed books, including Niddesa, Paṭisambhidāmagga, Nettippakaraṇa, Peṭakopadesa, and Milindapañha; canon boundaries vary by tradition.
The Vinaya Piṭaka adds 422 units: each rule of the monks’ and nuns’ analyses, the 22 chapters of the Khandhaka, the Parivāra, and the two Pātimokkhas read whole, all in Bhikkhu Brahmali’s English translation. The Abhidhamma Piṭaka adds 1,102 units from its seven books, in Pāli only, since SuttaCentral has no English translation of them. Both are off by default.
3,246 more units come from the Chinese Āgamas (Dīrgha, Madhyama, Saṃyukta and Ekottarika) and from Sanskrit, Tibetan and fragmentary manuscripts; 662 list English translations, chiefly by Anālayo, Patton and Bingenheimer. They are off by default too.
Tags show who speaks. “Buddhavacana” is presented in the text itself as the Buddha’s words; “Spoken by a disciple” covers suttas given by Sāriputta, Ānanda and others, and the verses of the Theragāthā and Therīgāthā; “Compiled or later text” covers exegesis, later narrative, and the Vinaya and Abhidhamma, which are tagged by book. “After the Parinibbāna” marks texts set after, or composed after, the Buddha’s death, including the Kathāvatthu, the Parivāra and the Khandhaka’s two council chapters. Āgama entries inherit the tag of their Pāli parallel. These are attributions made from the texts and traditional book-level assignments, not claims about historical layers, and a few are judgement calls.
Drawn suttas never repeat unless you remove them from history. Finishing a pool does not reset it. Progress counts a text as read once its full text has loaded in the daily reader, not as proof that you finished it. Texts load from SuttaCentral and require an internet connection.
